How to Hold Online Office Hours in Edorble

by Gabe Baker
You're Not the First

Office hours provide an important opportunity for students to communicate with teachers outside of the normal classroom environment. Holding your office hours online can be a convenient and powerful alternative to actually going to your real world “office” (if you have one), and they can be just as effective online as they are in person.

Edorble can be a powerful and playful place for you to hold your online office hours. You can claim a world for free and share the world code with your students. During your office hours, simply open up Edorble and enter your world code. Your students who want to “visit” you can do the same, at which point you will be in a 3D virtual world together with any student who wants to join you.  If you’re interested in trying this, you should have your students download Edorble and try it out in advance.

Just a casual office hour, while actually wearing pajamas, a t-shirt, and a hoodie.

In Edorble, you can talk with your students using voice chat, look at assignments together on the web in the auditorium, or go for a walk around the island as you talk about the issues at hand.

If you have multiple students that want to see you, but you only want to see one at a time, you can instruct them to wait outside the auditorium until you’re ready to see them. When you’re ready for the next student to come in, hold down the “b” key to broadcast your voice to everyone in the world (normally you only hear who is close to you) and let them know you’re ready.
